Hobie 20 Rudder Cam (Flawed by design?)

The Hobie 20 has a plastic (Polyoxymethylene) cam which allows each of its 2 rudders to rotate upward and lock.

This is a step backwards from the original Hobie 18 Aluminum Cam system which was bullet-proof.

I wonder if it wasn't a conscious business/design decision to generate more part revenue by making the part last only a season or two.

In any case, here is a rough sketch of the design:


Here is the zone of failure: This finger is designed to lock with an aluminum piece which over time impacts and repeatedly stresses it. Typically within 1-2 seasons this finger will fracture along the line shown below.
